Week 10

Mizuno are the Sunshine Coast Summer Season Champions, with an upset 9-8 win against Tibhar. Asif
Iqbal and Greg Kiorgaard were solid under finals pressure for Tibhar, with 3 good wins each, but that
wasn't enough to match the even contribution made by the Mizuno team of Steve Whiting, Pieter
Poldervaart, Gordon Holden and Greg Watson. Pieter Poldervaart had an outstanding night and guided
the team to an important doubles win late in the night. Congratulations Mizuno!

RESULTS:
Mizuno def Tibhar 9-8
Donic def Double Fish 10-7
Dawei def Butterfly 9-8
Nimatsu def Joola 10-7
Cornilleau def Nattaka 12-5

In other matches, visitor Virgo Buckland gave the local players some table tennis lessons, with 4 good
wins. Let's hope he returns again soon. Ross Anktell seems to be watching the ball a bit better, having 2
good wins this week. Desley Payne had a night she'd like to forget, not troubling the scorers in her
team's loss to Donic. Gary Kiorgaard (yes he's related to all the other Kiorgaards) strung 2 good wins
together this week and is finally breaking out of his son's shadow. Doubles match of the season
happened this week with Craig Atkinson and Ray Dunne defeating Christian Huen and Kevin Williams
11-8, 7-11, 19-17, 8-11, 12-10. Well fought guys! Paul Green, Ian Fenwick, Nathan Shepherdson,
Christian Huen and Glenn Price all had stellar nights, winning all their matches.
The club is closed next week (14 April) and the Autumn Season will commence on 21 April. For late
registrations please ring Steve urgently on 5442 3678 or 0434 977 354

Week 9

Finals next week will consist of 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8 and 9v10, with the top two teams, Mizuno and
Tibhar, playing off in the Grand Final.

RESULTS:
Butterfly def Donic 9-8
Cornilleau def Dawei 10-7
Mizuno def Joola 11-6
Double Fish def Nimatsu 9-8
Tibhar def Nattaka 12-5

Craig Atkinson's recent antenatal classes appear to have had a negative impact on his table tennis, with
Craig producing a woeful display, failing to win any matches in Round 9 of the season. Team mates
Steve Rowson and Greg Kiorgaard have been the big improvers in the second half of the season, with
the team going in as hot favourites for next week. Jimmy Yang showed his best form in yonks, with 4
wins and a lone hand in his team's victory against Nimatsu. Glen Price showed that his early form was no
flash in the pan, and selectors will surely elevate him to the premier division next season. Newcomer
Nathan Shepherdson nearly pulled off a clean sweep against Dawei and scouts suggest that he's been
playing and training in Brisbane, refining his skills to take on the coast's top players. Beware next
season! Ken Hay and Ian Fenwick finished the season with an undefeated doubles record. Pity they
couldn't back it up in other matches! Blake Kennedy came from behind to win his second match in the
top division, showing lots of promise for the future, unlike his father Peter, who seems to be winning less
and less matches as the years progress. Paul Green, Martin Tribe and Asif Iqbal again won all 3 of their
matches - finishing high up in the individual rankings.

Players, past and present, are reminded of the 2nd Annual Sunshine Coast Open Tournament, to be held
on the weekend of 9-10 May 2009 at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Details are available on the
club website.

Week 8

Finally the long awaited match between the two undefeated teams was realised this week and the
result was as close as it could be, with Mizuno prevailing.

RESULTS:
Butterfly def Joola 11-6
Donic def Dawei 9-8
Mizuno def Tibhar 9-8
Nimatsu def Cornilleau 13-4
Double Fish def Nattaka 11-6

Asif Iqbal gave Steve Whiting a flogging this week, demolishing the Tasmanian import in straight sets.
Mizuno, however, had the last laugh, with Gordon Holden and Pieter Poldervaart firing to win 6 of the
last 8 matches. Kevin Bell has finally hit his straps, with an outstanding display of table tennis, notching
up 4 wins and defeating pre-season favourite Christin Huen in 4 sets. Rik Blande appears to have shaken
off his Christmas pud, producing his best table tennis of the season, securing 2 good wins and 2 narrow
losses. Oliver McCully has finally got his team into line, with all players defeating their direct opponents
and winning all their doubles - a true team effort! After coming out of the wilderness unshaved and
ferocious, Matt Wilson has finally struck form, with 3 good wins. In another father-son challenge, young
gun Dale Fenwick just managed to hang on against Ian in a tight fifth set. Brian Pearson again showed
he is a player of the future, with 3 great wins and a close match against Martin Tribe. League leaders
Martin Tribe, Bernadette Caldwell and Ian Oakley, again had 3 wins and are the pick of the players this
season.

Week 7

The top two teams, Tibhar and Mizuno had narrow wins this week, showing the evenness of the
competition. These two teams are destined to clash in the grand final, with only two weeks to go.

RESULTS:
Dawei def Butterfly 12-5
Tibhar def Donic 9-7
Double Fish def Joola 12-5
Mizuno def Nimatsu 9-8
Nattaka def Cornilleau 10-7

Kevin Williams is back better than ever, with a dominant performance for Dawei, winning all his matches.
Young gun Simon Kiorgaard fired up this week with some good loops and counter hits. In the ultimate
battle of father and son, Simon beat Greg in a tight fifth set. Rising star Desley Payne again played
above her weight with two good wins for Double Fish. Christian Huen, who has been struggling for form
(or everyone else is getting better) bounced back this week, with three excellent wins against quality
opposition. Steve Rowson responded to criticism in the best way possible, securing three wins and the
match for Tibhar. In the battle of the defenders and, presumably, the most boring game of the season,
Gordon Holden took the spoils in a hard fought game against Kevin Bell, in what would eventually decide
the match. Gordon Holden has been in career best form - obviously those steroid tablets are working.
Martin Tribe, Asif Iqbal, Paul Green and Ian Oakley also all won their matches convincingly and stand out
at the top of the individual rankings.

Week 6
Tuesday night saw the completion of Round 6 in the Sunshine Coast Table Tennis League and some very
close matches.

RESULTS:
Tibhar def Butterfly 9-8
Donic def Nimatsu 9-8
Dawei def Joola 9-8
Mizuno def Nattaka 12-5
Double Fish def Cornilleau 9-8

Vice President Steve Rowson appeared to have too much on his mind, mustering up only one win for the
night. Luckily, the rest of the team rallied to pull off a good win for Tibhar. Newcomer Glenn Price had a
blinder, winning all three matches against talented opposition. Craig Atkinson took time off from his
pregnancy classes to play his first night of the season and did his team need him! Although rusty, he
managed two wins. Club President Mark Jenkins has shelved early retirement plans after some good wins
over the last two weeks, his latest win against Craig Atkinson. In hot form is Brian Pearson, who won
three matches and was a whisker away from defeating Ian Fenwick in his 4th match. Oliver McCully was
left scratching his head after his straight sets loss to import Christian Huen. Paul Green, Martin Tribe and
Bernadette Caldwell showed that experience matters, winning all matches this week.

Week 5
Round 5 of the Summer Season saw some dominant performances by the top teams and outstanding
play from all.

RESULTS:
Butterfly def Nimatsu 10-7
Donic def Nattaka 11-6
Tibhar def Joola 11-6
Dawei def Doublefish 11-6
Mizuno def Cornilleau 15-2

Blake Kennedy, a star in the making, has broken the drought, securing his first win for Butterfly in a
gruelling 5 setter against Craig Pearson. Newcomer Glenn Rice showed some excellent form for Nimatsu,
winning all his singles matches. The Fenwicks have finally hit form, with Ian and Dale winning all their
matches, including the doubles, for their respective teams. Bernadette Caldwell gave Gerrit Fialla a table
tennis tutorial, showing that the fairer sex can match it with the men. Player of the round this week has
to be Gordon Holden, in a stunning display of defence and attack, winning all 4 rubbers against highly
rated opponents, along with the sly old dog Pieter Poldervaart. Pieter has shrugged off suggestions of
retirement with a masterful return to form. Both Paul Green and Ken Hay are proving tough opponents,
winning all 3 singles matches again. Desley Payne played above her rankings, with 3 good wins and
seems to be a player of the future. Greg Kiorgaard is now a "force to be reckoned with" after securing 3
good wins last week.

Week 4

RESULTS:
Butterfly def Nattaka 15-2
Donic def Cornilleau 10-7
Joola def Nimatsu 9-8
Mizuno def Doublefish 16-1
Tibhar def Dawei 9-8

Week 3
Round 3 of the summer season saw some highly contested matches with three matches decided by the
last rubber.

RESULTS:
Cornilleau def Butterfly 9-8
Mizuno def Donic 13-4
Joola def Nattaka 6-5
Nimatsu def Dawei 11-6
Tibhar def Doublefish 9-8

First night back for Martin Tribe saw him excel in all of his matches. Kevin Williams, also coming back
after surgery had lost none of his ability, with two good results. Steve Whiting continued his good form
for Mizuno, dominating in all his matches. Gary Kiorgaard caused the upset of the season, defeating
Kevin Bell in four. This was the only match Kevin lost for the night! Ian Oakley was in hot form (using
bat number 3), winning all his matches. In his first season, Asif Iqbal beat the crowd favourite Oliver
McCully, who is now reassessing his game plan. Match of the round was an epic battle between Blake
Kennedy and Patrick Keating, with Patrick the victor in the deciding game.

Week 2
Second night of the new season was played in extreme heat and humidity, but players fought on and
the results are as follows:

RESULTS:
Mizuno def Butterfly 14-3
Doublefish def Donic 14-3
Joola def Cornilleau 10-7
Dawei def Nattaka 10-7
Tibhar def Nimatsu 11-6

Tasmanian, Steve Whiting, has returned to the club in fine form, winning all his matches and fellow
teammate Pieter Poldervaart bounced back with 4 from 4. The strong teams are starting to emerge, with
teammates Jimmy Yang and Oliver McCully winning all matches. The big news this week was the form of
Brian Pearson, who scorched the table, beating last season's number one player and winning all of his
matches. Paul Gordon also continued his fine form for Joola. Experienced campaigner, Ken Hay,
outsmarted his opposition this week to win convincingly for Dawei. A number of upsets occurred when
Tibhar played Nimatsu, with Greg Kiorgaard winning 3 and annihilating Kevin Bell against the odds. Steve
Rowson had a great night, with 3 wins, before falling to Kevin in a thriller. Ian Oakley was left scratching
his head and we think will have some new tactics for next week's matches.

Week 1
The new season commenced last Tuesday night at the Sunshine Coast Table Tennis Club. It's shaping
up as one of our best seasons in a while with 10 four man teams.

RESULTS:
Double Fish def Butterfly 13-4
Donic def Joola 10-7
Mizuno def Dawei 10-7
Tibhar def Cornilleau 11-6
Nimatsu def Nattaka 14-3

Oliver McCully has obviously been practising over the summer break, having some early form for Double
Fish, convincingly winning all three matches. Paul Green, a new club member, looks to have the goods
and may be the person to beat this season. Pieter Poldervaart ran out of steam in his first season back
for a while and maybe needs to increase his training regime. Jim Kenworthy won all his matches and, if
his shoulder stands up, will be another likely prospect. Overseas import, Christian Huen, defeated flashy
newcomer Asif Iqbal, to win all three matches. Nimatsu players, Ian Oakley and Kevin Bell, are eying off
the summer comp trophies already, on their way to dominant wins against Nattaka. Blake Kennedy, the
club's youngest member, played well in his debut match in the division.
